On 16 and 17 October 2026, Daniel B. Vázquez Calero, a vet at Orisylva and Aracavia, attended two events in Madrid dedicated to exotic animal medicine: the AVAFES Madrid Conference and the AVEPA-GMCAE Exotic Animal Conference. Avian medicine was a key focus of both events.

Orisylva shares this professional development activity by Daniel, connecting his work in Granada with the experience of the Aracavia team in Málaga.

Two opportunities to keep learning

On Friday 16 October, Daniel and Alba Escudero attended the AVAFES Madrid Conference. On Saturday 17 October, Daniel joined Giorgio, Alba and Ángel from the Aracavia team at the meeting organised by AVEPA’s Exotic Animal Medicine and Surgery Group, held at the Official College of Veterinarians of Madrid.

The events brought together presentations, clinical experience and opportunities to exchange ideas with other professionals. They offered a chance to refresh knowledge and learn about the work of other teams caring for birds and other non-traditional species.

Avian medicine: topics covered at the events

At AVAFES Madrid, one of the talks focused on the diagnosis and treatment of kidney disease in birds, presented by Andrés Montesinos.

The GMCAE programme covered diagnostic imaging and endoscopy, internal medicine in parrots, anaesthesia in high-risk avian patients and behavioural medicine. There was also a clinical reasoning session and a research presentation on salmonellosis in urban pigeons.

Beyond the individual topics, these meetings provide time to compare experiences and reflect on clinical decisions. Continuing professional development is part of Daniel’s work at both clinics.

Sharing knowledge between Granada and Málaga

Orisylva provides veterinary care for exotic animals in Granada by appointment, working with clinics across the province, with support from Aracavia in Málaga for certain procedures.

Daniel’s participation in these events is part of the relationship between the two projects. Orisylva shares the news while preserving the context of the activity and acknowledging the Aracavia team who attended.
